Go out on an oyster adventure with Cottage City Oysters and Proud Pour, where you’ll learn about the oyster farming process from start to finish. They start by cruising over to the Lagoon Hatchery- to talk about the hatchery process and where it all begins, then venture under the drawbridge and out into the Vineyard Sound (300ft from shore) to visit the Cottage City Oyster Farm. Dan and Greg will show you the nursery where they raise the babies, show you the solar powered work raft and farm equipment, and then pull up a cage full of market oysters and show you how to cull! It's an experience like no other. Pick up is at the public launch in the Lagoon in our custom designed 22' 1978 Boston Whaler work boat. Attire is beach/farm (it's a work boat so you might get a little dirty).
Proud Pour pairs wines with solutions to local environmental problems. Their first wine, The Oyster, is a Sauvignon Blanc that restores 100 wild oysters per bottle. It also happens to be the perfect pair to your oyster tour - you'll get a taste and have a chance to chat with the brand representatives while learning all about their mission on island.
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your tour. Cottage City Oysters will pick up by boat at the Lagoon Pond Public Launch which is before the drawbridge if coming from Vineyard Haven, inside the pond.
Disclaimer: In the event of unsafe boat conditions/weather (too windy), the tour will take place on land, where you will start at lagoon landing, walk over the bridge and to the land bank area to look at hatchery, then walk across street to Eastville Beach where we will have an oyster cage in the parking lot and oysters.
